What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the sector of dentistry that deals with the alignment of the teeth.
Teeth that are skew or misaligned cause severe problems in the mouth. Bacteria and plaque gather where teeth overlap and create hotspots for decay, cavities, and discolouration.
Misaligned teeth also affect your bite, leading to problems while eating and speaking. This, in turn, may also lead to jaw tension and pain.
Luckily, orthodontics addresses these issues using special devices, like braces or retainers.
Do I need orthodontics?
If you have any of the following oral issues, you may be an ideal candidate for orthodontic treatment:
- Underbite: is when the bottom teeth are too far forward
- Overbite: is when the upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth
- Spacing: is when there are significant gaps or spaces between the teeth
- Open bite: is when there is a space between the biting surfaces of the front and side teeth
- A misplaced midline: is when the centre of the upper teeth does not line up with the centre of the lower teeth
- Crowded teeth: is when there are too many teeth in the mouth
Types of orthodontic devices
Metal braces
These are the most common type of braces. Metal braces consist of brackets that are placed on the front or back of teeth and tightened wires to move the teeth to the correct position. Metal braces consist of stainless steel brackets and wires. They are usually the most cost-effective types of braces, so they're a great option.
Damon braces
Damon braces are self-ligating and use a sliding mechanism to connect archwires. These braces produce faster results because the teeth can move independently without needing adjustment. Damon braces cause less friction and pressure on the teeth, making movement less painful. In addition, the braces are easier to keep clean.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces work similarly to metal braces from a clear, transparent ceramic material. This means the braces are far less noticeable and blend in better with your teeth- making it an ideal choice for self-conscious teenagers.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are orthodontic devices that straighten teeth with a series of almost invisible, removable aligners custom-made for your teeth. Aligners get replaced every two weeks to gradually move teeth into the correct position, week by week. Clear aligners are comfortable, clear and removable-transforming your smile without disrupting your life.
